The Finnish Children’s Book Institute’s Onnimanni Prize has been award since 1993 for a work or activity that promotes children’s and young literature or its status and significance. The prize can be award to an individual or a community. The award includes Marjatta Kurenniemi’s fairy tale novel Oli ennen Onnimanni and three cash prizes. This year, the prize will be awarded to a child who is reading for the first time.
The award is given to Lukuhirmu Hertta for her children’s book tips and content on social media that inspire reading and at the same time serve as a positive example for other children. Hertta shares the joy of reading on channels that are familiar to children and young people. In this way, she brings books closer to children and young people’s own world of experience. It is essential that Hertta gives tips specifically from one child to another.
A huge amount of high-quality children’s
And young adult literature is publish in Finland every year, but it does not get the visibility it deserves. Hertta highlights children’s literature and the hobby of reading in a positive light and does its part to telegram database create enthusiasm for books. The year 2020 has been exceptional and virtual book content plays an even more important role than ever.
The jury wants to emphasize the importance of children’s own book content and opinions and show with the award that the voices of children and young people should also be heard in literary discussions.
On the day of the fairy tale
Sunday, October 18, we celebrate the national Fairy Tale Day. On Fairy Tale Day, fairy tales are read, perform and discuss with people of all ages in theatres, libraries, bookstores, schools, daycare centers, nursing homes, cultural centers and museums all over the country. Inspired by Fairy Tale Day
The Lukemo team and the staff of the Children’s Book Institute recalled the fairy tales and fairy tale books that have been particularly memorable to them. Which fairy tale has stuck in your mind?
“In one of them, Mrs. Lehtinen receives an invitation to the Spring Wind Ball, where she arrives – like all the other participants – in a light green dress. I read the Spring Wind Ball fairy tale for the first time in the 1980s and have been watching the leaves fluttering in the wind ever since. Like Kurenniemi: from spring to autumn. The leaves dance and enjoy themselves in their colorful costumes, and when winter comes, we retreat indoors. That’s a lifestyle I would love to try.”
In hindsight, I wondered if anyone had peeked
Inside the book before giving it to me as a gift for my underage schoolmate. This is a real Grimm. On the last page, the wick stepmother arrives as a guest at Snow White and the prince’s wedding. And there are iron shoes heat with glowing coals waiting for her. They are push into her feet with pliers and she is force to dance until she falls to the ground dead. As a child, I found this both absolutely terrifying and terribly exciting.
I read the end of the story alone many times in my room, where I could be horrified by it in peace. I also had a small suspicion that the book might be take away from me if its horrors were reveal to adults. The illustration in particular left a lasting impression on me of the beautiful clearing .
